How to Unlock Alchemy: The Short Route
Alchemy starts through the Plague Doctor's story, rather than by building a collection of workbenches first. Continue the village quests until you can meet him in the underground area, then follow his laboratory instructions. The tower behind your house contains the laboratory used for your first experiments. Once you have access and the Dream Dust formula, research its ingredients at the Study Table, load Alchemy Flasks onto the Flask shelf, and mix at Laboratory I.
Meet the Plague Doctor and Open the Laboratory
If the technology tree shows an alchemy requirement tied to the Plague Doctor, more gathering will not satisfy that story gate. Return to the village quest chain and speak with Jully after completing the available village tasks. Follow the subsequent home and basement objectives, including any rubble blocking your route, until you reach the Doctor.
Continue his dialogue and laboratory objectives before trying to brew a quest item. Treat access, formula unlocks, and ingredient research as separate checks: reaching a room does not mean every recipe or material is already available. The laboratory is in the tower behind the house. Once inside, identify the Study Table, Laboratory, Flask shelf, and Folio. These serve different purposes; opening the book alone does not study an ingredient or put flasks on the shelf.
Study Ingredients, Supply Flasks, and Match Runes
Inspect a material before spending Science on it. Ingredients with undiscovered rune properties display unknown rune information. Research the material at the Study Table to reveal those properties and make it available for laboratory mixing. Check the study cost first: the starter supplies are limited, so begin with the ingredients needed for your current quest.
The Folio separates discovered formulas from studied ingredients. Use it to compare a product's red, green, and blue rune requirements with the materials you have researched. The ingredient totals must match the formula exactly; adding extra runes does not make a stronger version of the same product.
Load Alchemy Flasks onto the Flask shelf before crafting. A correct formula and enough ingredients will not replace a missing flask. For the first batch, check the formula, studied ingredients, and shelf count separately, then craft a single item before committing your stock.
Later equipment includes Laboratory II, the Formulation Bench, and the Distillation Cube. You do not need to build all of them to make the first Dream Dust. Follow the station and technology named by the recipe you are actually trying to complete.
How to Make Dream Dust
Dream Dust is a laboratory mixture with a target of one green rune and one blue rune, with no red. A straightforward starting combination is Water and Blood. Research both at the Study Table first, check that the Dream Dust formula is available, and supply the Flask shelf before selecting them at Laboratory I.
Compare the selected ingredients with the target shown in the laboratory instead of adding unrelated materials. If an ingredient is absent from the selection, check its research status. If the product does not appear, check the rune totals and formula unlock. If crafting is unavailable despite the correct mixture, inspect your ingredients and flasks.
Keep Dream Dust as a step in the Doctor's quest rather than treating it as a complete resurrection recipe. Zombie preparation has its own materials and requirements. Use the resurrection guide when you are ready to move from laboratory progression to creating workers.

Running Out of Science or Materials
Science for studying ingredients is different from the colored Technology Points used in the technology tree. If you spent the starting research supply on unrelated items, inspect Science Kits at the Study Table. Check the Writing Desk for a Science Kit recipe you have unlocked rather than assuming the starting chest is your only supply. Read the current recipe before setting aside paper, ink, or flasks for it.
Keep a small stock of materials you have already studied near the laboratory. Check the Folio before gathering more, so you collect ingredients that can actually meet your next formula.
